The new TV anime based on CLAMP's classic work Magic Knight Rayearth, launched nearly 30 years later, officially began airing on October 7, 2026. Officials recently announced one more detail that made voice actor fans' eyes light up: the 'classmate' characters who appear together with protagonist Hikaru Shido at Tokyo Tower in Episode 1 are voiced by M・A・O, Ms. Natsumi Takamori, and Miyuki Sakurai.

The story of the new anime's Episode 1, 'From Another World,' begins with middle school student Hikaru Shido going to Tokyo Tower for a social studies excursion. In this scene, Hikaru meets Umi Ryuzaki and Fuu Hououji from other schools for the first time. At the moment the three's eyes meet, they hear a mysterious voice—'Please save this world, legendary Magic Knights'—and are immediately summoned to the other world, Cephiro.

The three classmate voice actors announced this time are precisely the classmates who appeared together with Hikari at Tokyo Tower in Episode 1. Although the official names of these classmate characters have not yet been revealed, the voice cast lineup alone has already sparked discussion on social media.

M・A・O(Mao Ichimichi): One of the most recognizable voice actresses in today's anime industry, with notable roles including Pecorine in Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Iris in Fire Force, Shion in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and Luka Millfy in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. She is also active in tokusatsu and video game voice acting, with an extremely wide vocal range, able to handle everything from lively girls to calm and composed characters.

Miyuki Sakurai: Among the three, she is the one with relatively less experience. She is affiliated with the Rush Style agency, and her representative work is Minato Yuzuki in The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons. She also appeared in The Black Cat and the Witch's Classroom, which began airing in April 2026, playing the role of Capella Capricorn. Joining the voice cast of Magic Knight Rayearth this time is undoubtedly an important exposure opportunity for her.

After the announcement, many fans in the Japanese community noticed an interesting coincidence: both M・A・O and Ms. Natsumi Takamori had previously voiced characters in The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls (Sagisawa Fumika and Miku Maekawa), and now they appear together again in Magic Knight Rayearth, prompting some producers to exclaim, "What kind of dream crossover is this?"

On the other hand, the new Magic Knight Rayearth is itself one of the most anticipated remake works of the season. The original manga was serialized by CLAMP from 1993 to 1995 and first adapted into a TV anime in 1994. This new work is directed by Yui Miura, with Shigeru Murakoshi as series composition, animation production handled by E&H production, and music by Yuki Kajiura, Shiho Terada, and Takumi Ozawa. The voice cast for the three main characters is Ayane Sakura (Hikaru Shidou), Rumi Okubo (Umi Ryuuzaki), and Rie Takahashi (Fuu Hououji).

That a remake anime would bring in voice actors of the caliber of M・A・O and Ms. Natsumi Takamori for the "background classmates" in episode 1 also reflects, to some extent, how much the production side values this work. As for whether these three classmates will still have roles in the later story, that remains unknown for now, but the cast in episode 1 alone has already made many voice actor fans decide to keep watching.
