Work Overview
The Quintessential Quintuplets is a manga by Negi Haruba, serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2017 to 2020, with 14 volumes total and 20 million copies in circulation, and it won the 43rd Kodansha Manga Award in the Shonen category.
The story opens in flashback: the male lead, Fuutarou Uesugi, dozes off at the wedding venue and recalls his high school days—the groom is going to marry one of the quintuplets. Fuutarou, a poor but top-of-his-year second-year student, takes a part-time job as a "private tutor for a wealthy young lady" to pay off his family's debts, but his students turn out to be the Nakano quintuplets, who have no interest in studying at all and are on the verge of failing.
Fuutarou gradually earns the trust of Yotsuba, Miku, and Ichika, and even the most difficult Nino and Itsuki slowly begin to change; after advancing to their third year, the five sisters transfer into his class. The story ultimately heads toward the wedding—which of the five wears the bridal dress is the mystery that runs through the entire work.

③ The Ending and the Truth (Major Spoilers)
⚠️ Spoilers: This work is framed around "the day of the wedding, as the groom Fuutarou recalls his high school days"; the one who ultimately marries Fuutarou isYotsuba Nakano——In the wedding arc, the five of them all wear bridal gowns and have him identify the bride, which is the most famous scene in this work. (The choice follows the Chinese Wikipedia and general consensus; the Japanese Wikipedia consulted for this verification did not state it explicitly, so this note is retained.)
⚠️ Spoilers: The key figure "the girl in the photo," who calls herself Rena, is the girl Fuutarou met during his sixth-grade school trip, and she is the starting point that motivated him to study hard.
⚠️ Spoilers: The quintuplets' biological mother, Rena Nakano, died five years before the start of this work (her death anniversary is August 14); their biological father, Jinno Mudo, fled after learning she was pregnant with quintuplets, and during the school festival he was disowned by Itsuki and their stepfather Maruo.
Characters
Ichika Nakano Nakano Ichika
The eldest of the quintuplets, a mature and alluring rookie actress and model with a slightly devilish air. She appears composed, but is actually emotionally delicate, always hiding her true feelings behind a smile. She is closest to Miku, yet was the first to notice that Miku liked Fuutarou; after the fireworks festival she built a partnership with Fuutarou, finding herself torn between family affection and love.
Nino Nakano Nakano Nino
The second of the quintuplets, stylish and outgoing with a sharp tongue, but actually afraid of loneliness and pure-hearted, valuing family above all. She is good at housework and cooking, and is the family's head chef. She was initially the most resistant to Fuutarou, but later was the first to confess; Ichika described her as a "runaway train of love"; after the final exams she cut her long hair, symbolizing that she had let go of her attachment to the past.
Miku Nakano Nakano Miku
The third of the quintuplets, introverted and quiet with little self-confidence, yet she has the best grades among the five sisters and was the first to fall in love with Fuutarou. She loves Sengoku history and is skilled at disguising herself as her sisters. Because Fuutarou discovered and affirmed her interests, she regained her confidence, and she was the first sister to accept Fuutarou as a tutor; during the forest school trip she told Ichika she wanted to compete fairly.
Yotsuba Nakano Nakano Yotsuba
The fourth of the quintuplets, she is innocent and simple, full of energy, always greeting people with a smile, and has outstanding athletic ability but the worst grades. She always thinks of others, yet doesn't know what she herself wants.
Itsuki Nakano Nakano Itsuki
The fifth of the quintuplets, she is earnest and straightforward, speaks politely but isn't honest about her feelings, and loves to eat and cry easily. She was the first sister to meet Fuutarou, and also the first to reject him. Because of her mother's words she was wary of Fuutarou, but during the hot spring trip she redefined their relationship as friends, and set her goal on becoming a teacher; she is the only sister who knows where Fuutarou lives, and the one who visits the Uesugi household most often.
Fuutarou Uesugi Uesugi Fuutarou
The male protagonist of this work, a gifted student who has ranked first in his grade for years, and who takes on tutoring the Nakano quintuplets because of his family's poverty and debt. On the surface he is serious and humorless, but inside he is honest and can see through others' emotions; in sixth grade he met a girl in Kyoto who changed his life.
Main Supporting Characters
Nakano Maruo Nakano Maruo
The quintuplets' stepfather, and also Rena's former student. By profession he is a doctor and a wealthy hospital-related asset owner. He is cold in personality and expressionless, and though busy with work he cares deeply about his five daughters. He is an old acquaintance of Fuutarou's father Yuuya (Yuuya was once his subordinate), and it is precisely this connection that led to Fuutarou becoming the quintuplets' tutor.
Nakano Rena Nakano Rena
The quintuplets' biological mother, who died of illness several years before the start of the main story and appears only in memories; her death anniversary is August 14. In life she was a teacher, strict in discipline and often meting out iron-fisted punishment to students, yet deeply loved, and Itsuki described her as "a gentle and motherly person." Before remarrying Maruo, she lived in poverty as a single mother with her daughters.
Uesugi Isanari Uesugi Isanari
The father of Fuutarou and Raiha, with spiky blond hair and sunglasses perched on his head. He has a wild, unrestrained personality and is not good at studying; Fuutarou's past personality was very similar to his. After his wife's death he often worked away from home, struggling to support the family under debt; he has known Maruo since their student days, when he was his subordinate.
Uesugi Seba Uesugi Raiha
Futaro's younger sister, a sixth-grade elementary school student. She has an innocent, carefree personality, and her smile always lifts the spirits of those around her; despite her frail constitution, she single-handedly takes care of the Uesugi household chores and even keeps the family account book. She loves the Nakano quintuplets very much, and is especially close to Yotsuba and Itsuki, often serving as a lubricant between Futaro and the five sisters.

⚠️ Expand to view: Key characters related to identities and the ending (spoilers)
Yotsuba Nakano Nakano Yotsuba
The fourth of the quintuplets, naturally innocent and full of energy, always greeting people with a smile, with outstanding athletic ability but the worst grades. The girl in the photo Shashin no Shoujo
The girl Futaro met during a school trip to Kyoto in sixth grade; the two played together and took a photo, which was kept in his student ID for many years. ⚠️Spoiler: She is actually Yotsuba; and the woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat who reappears before Futaro claiming to be Rena in the main story is actually Itsuki in disguise.
Mudo Jinnosuke Jinnosuke Mudo
The biological father of the quintuplets, a middle-aged man with a bald head and white beard, who was once Rena's teacher and colleague. After learning Rena was pregnant, he disappeared without a trace, and for many years toured the country as a lecturer. Outwardly gentle but extremely self-centered, he never fulfilled his responsibilities as a father, and during the school festival, Itsuki and Maruo severed their father-daughter relationship with him face to face.

Natsumi Takamori and This Work
In this work, Ms. Natsumi Takamori playsUesugi Seba——The younger sister of the male protagonist, Uesugi Futaro.
Raiha is in sixth grade at the beginning of the story and later advances to first year of middle school; after their mother's early death, she effectively manages the Uesugi household finances and all the housework (including cooking and the family account book), and though somewhat frail, she is Futaro's emotional support. She loves the five sisters very much, especially Yotsuba and Itsuki; when she first met the other four, she said, "There are four Itsuki sisters over there," and she can distinguish the five by hair length and accessories——something even Futaro cannot do.
In the wedding arc, it is also she who discovers that her father and brother both forgot to bring the rings. She appears from manga chapter 1 and anime episode 1, and is a regular supporting character rather than a main character.
