Introduction
Ao Sorakado is one of the main heroines in Key's romance adventure game "Summer Pockets" and its derivative works. She also appears as a romanceable character in the expanded edition "Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE". She is the daughter of the Sorakado family, which oversees the mountain rituals on Torishiro Island, and is known as "The Girl Who Pursues the Island's Legacy". She is voiced byNatsumi Takamori.
Appearance
Ao Sorakado has smooth, flowing long hair and delicate features. Her hair color has been described as "neither pure white nor gray, but crystalline, solid yet ethereal", and paired with her large, angular eyes, she is the only heroine in the game drawn in a deliberately retro art style. Her everyday clothing is simple and natural, but when she wears her shrine maiden attire, it adds an air of mystery.
Personality
Ao is outgoing and easygoing, able to get along with anyone regardless of age or gender. She is cheerful and easily persuaded, almost never refusing a request, which has led islanders to jokingly call her "the easiest woman to fool on the island".
However, Ao also possesses a surprising gap moe. Due to reading countless memories from others, she has an unusually deep knowledge of romantic and adult matters, but remains purely "theoretical"—she often mishears innocent remarks and lets her imagination run wild, blushing and conjuring up lewd scenarios in her head. She vehemently denies this, insisting, "I'm absolutely not perverted, and I never could be!" Her friends describe her as having a "secretly dirty mind" or a "pink-tinged brain". When it comes to love, she acts carefree on the outside, but inside she's shy and flustered.
Background and Duty
Ao hails from the Sorakado family, which oversees the mountain rituals of Torishiro Island and guides the "Seven Shadow Butterflies". She is the successor to a long-standing tradition of shrine maidens. As the family's second daughter, she has borne the weighty responsibility of officiating the mountain rites since childhood, approaching every ceremony with unwavering determination.
In her daily life, besides performing rituals, she works part-time at the island's dagashiya (traditional snack shop) and is beloved by people of all ages. Islanders are long accustomed to the sight of her falling asleep anywhere and everywhere around the island; it has become a completely normal part of their daily lives.
Ability and Its Price
Ao Sorakado possesses a unique ability—by touching entities known as "Seven Shadow Butterflies", she can read the memories of others. These butterflies are manifestations of "memories of the dead" or fragments of consciousness. The duty of the Sorakado family is to guide these butterflies during summer to the "Lost Orange" tree, which blooms only in summer, effectively "ferrying" them to the afterlife.
The price for this ability is immense. Each time she touches a Seven Shadow Butterfly, Ao's brain must process and store vast amounts of foreign memories, draining her physical and mental stamina to the point where she uncontrollably falls asleep anytime, anywhere. However, as a result, she excels academically and possesses a wealth of general knowledge far beyond her peers—including, of course, certain "mature" knowledge.
The reason she willingly takes on this taboo burden is to save her twin sister—Ai Sorakado.
Bond with Her Sister, Ai Sorakado
Ao and her twin sister, Ai, were close from childhood. Their elder sister Ai was always better at finding and catching butterflies. Hoping to earn her sister's praise, the younger Ao once desperately searched for a "special butterfly"—an act that tragically led to Ai getting caught in an accident and falling into a prolonged slumber.
In truth, just before her near-death experience, Ai released her own memories—her Seven Shadow Butterfly. To find her sister's butterfly and awaken her, Ao has since devoted herself entirely to the family's duty, year after year touching Seven Shadow Butterflies on summer nights, searching through countless fragments of memories for Ai's.
The conclusion of Ao's route is bittersweet: with the support of the protagonist, Hairi Takahara, Ao finally recovers Ai's Seven Shadow Butterfly and her sister awakens. However, due to years of excessive contact with the butterflies, Ao has accumulated an overwhelming amount of foreign memories and ultimately falls into a deep sleep herself.
Key Relationships
Hairi Takahara: The protagonist. The two meet under a large tree on Torishiro Island when Hairi catches Ao as she is about to fall while sleeping. This marks the beginning of their "troublesome relationship". By the end of Ao's route, the summer spent with Hairi helps her mature into a young woman.
Inari: Ao is almost always accompanied by a wild fox (?) named Inari, who can speak human language. Inari understands human speech and is Ao's closest confidant, bringing warmth and laughter to her daily life.
Ai Sorakado: Her twin sister, who has been in a long slumber since the accident. She is the driving force and core emotional bond behind all of Ao's actions.
Island Children: Ao, who works part-time at the snack shop, is affectionately called "Master" or "Little Miko" by the children, who constantly flock around her.
Islanders: Ao is immensely popular with people of all ages on the island. Girls confide their secrets in her, and boys comfortably treat her as a friend. She is known as the island's "All-Purpose Miko".
Story and Reception
Written personally by Kai, one of Key's veteran scenario writers, Ao's route is widely considered by players to be one of the most moving storylines in "Summer Pockets". The playful banter between Ao and Hairi in daily scenes is full of humor, and her characterization is deeply layered. As the story unfolds, the reasons behind her narcolepsy and "risqué" tendencies are given a heartbreaking explanation—behind that adorable gap moe lies the solitary figure of a girl who bears the burden of others' memories day after day, carrying guilt and responsibility alone.
One player review stated: Ao's vibrant energy and passion make you fall for her at first sight; but after understanding her story, you'll be profoundly moved by her "loud yet strong" heart. With the perfectly timed BGM "Other side Blue" and delicate psychological portrayal, the scenes where the Seven Shadow Butterflies speak their truths have wrung countless tears from players.
Due to the exceptionally well-written story and the fact it was personally penned by Kai, fans have jokingly complained that Ao is clearly the "creator's daughter".

Anime-Original Shots and Pacing Adjustments: Some details omitted in the game are shown through new scenes, making the story flow more smoothly.
Chemistry of a Comedy Duo: The lighthearted banter between Ao and Hairi becomes a highlight of this arc. Japanese reviews noted that Ao's "secretly pervy" side paired with Hairi's straight-man reactions creates a delightful comedic rhythm, a charm not found in previous routes.
Foreshadowing the Main Story: Elements introduced in Ao's route, such as the Seven Shadow Butterflies and changes in "Umi", lay important groundwork for the later ALKA and POCKET storylines.

Trivia and Miscellany
- Shaved Ice Fanatic: Ao's favorite food is shaved ice, especially the Blue Hawaii flavor. Choosing "I'll have some shaved ice" is a key interaction option in the game.
- Dozing Off Anywhere: As a consequence of touching Seven Shadow Butterflies and venturing into the mountains at night, Ao's greatest "hobby" is napping, which has become her trademark. Her motto, "I'll sleep while waiting for your good news," stems from this.
- Weak Ears: Ao's ears are a sensitive weak spot.
- Likes Cute Girls: The official setting explicitly states that Ao "likes cute girls".
- Character Song: Ao's character song is "Hiyoku no Kouchou" ("A Pair of Winged Butterflies"), sung by Natsumi Takamori. Interestingly, the lyrics are almost entirely about her sister Ao, with the male protagonist barely mentioned, much to some players' "jealousy". This "shortcoming" was addressed with the new character song "Yumemidori no Koi" ("Love of the Dream-Vision Bird") released for the TV anime.
If "Hiyoku" is Ao's heartfelt confession to her sister, the spiritual pillar that sustains her solitary journey, then the focus of "Yumemidori" quietly shifts, telling the story of how Ao's heart is first illuminated by "love" under Hairi's companionship. It perfectly completes Ao's story, showing her growth from a shrine maiden who lived solely for her sister into a whole person with her own love and life. - Current Status: At the very end of the story, Ao awakens from her long slumber.
