Work Overview

《Summer Pockets》is a romance adventure game released by Key in 2018, set on the fictional island of "Torishirojima" in the Seto Inland Sea. The protagonist, Hairi Takahara, comes to the island to sort through the belongings of his late grandmother and spends a summer there; he meets several girls on the island and gradually comes into contact with the island's legend of the "Seven-Shadow Butterflies"—the lingering remnants of memories left behind by those who died with regrets.

This work is Key's first completely new original title in seven years, following 2011's《Rewrite》. Jun Maeda served as original concept, the scenario was written by three writers—Yuu Niijima, Kai, and Hasama—and the original art was handled jointly by Na-Ga, Tsubasu Izumi, and Yuunon Nagayama. With "summer" and "memory" as its twin pillars, the work balances bright, lighthearted island daily life with heavy emotional payoff.

The story uses a three-layer structure: first you play through the individual routes of the four heroines, and only after clearing them all does the core "ALKA Route" unlock, leading to the true ending, the "Pocket Route." This design allows stories that initially seem independent to ultimately all be gathered back into the memories of a single summer.

The title "Summer Pockets" means a pocket for keeping the precious memories of boyhood, which the developers liken to "a small treasure box of summer." In 2018, it won first place in both the overall category and the scenario category of Getchu's "Bishoujo Game Awards," and also received the Grand Prize and User Support Award at that year's Moe Game Awards (萌えゲーアワード).

Route Guide (Spoilers)

The following sections all involve key plot settings and are collapsed by default; please expand them yourself.

The story's setting, "Torishirojima," is a fictional remote island in the Seto Inland Sea, modeled after Naoshima, Megijima, and Ogijima. Outsiders are called "people (like) migratory birds (渡りの人)," and hospitality toward visitors is a custom on the island.

The island's key setting is the "Seven Shadow Butterflies"—the anime's official website defines them as "the lingering memories of people who died with regrets."Sorakado AoTo wake her comatose twin sisterAi Sorakado, she repeatedly comes into contact with the Seven-Shadow Butterflies to read others' memories, and because of that she often falls asleep everywhere.

The Naruse family presides over all the island's Shinto rites and festivals, and their women have passed down "mysterious power (不思議な力)" through the generations (Shiroha's precognition is one such example); the island also has the "Summer Bird Ritual (夏鳥の儀)" event, a tradition known as underwater martial arts, the temporary engagement "Butterfly Hinge Pledge (蝶番の契り)," as well as the frequently heard-of "spiriting away (神隠し)" and "Legend of Shiroha (白羽の伝承)." There is also the "Torishirojima Youth Corps," which is responsible for maintaining public order.

The official anime states "the summer that repeats endlessly" at the beginning of each episode—this time structure that is experienced over and over is the most central setting of the entire work.

Common Route: During summer vacation, the protagonist, Hikaruhara Hiori, comes to Torishirojima to sort through his late grandmother's belongings, lives with his aunt Misaki Kyouko, and gets to know the island's boys' group and several girls. The official copy sets the tone for this opening with four passages of "he met a certain girl."

This game has 6 endings in total—the individual routes of the 4 heroines, plus ALKA and Pocket. The four heroines are: Naruse Shiroha (the main heroine),Sorakado Ao, Kushima Kamome, and Tsumugi Wenders. After the common portion ends, you enter each route based on your choices; heroines you have already cleared disappear from the title screen, which you can use to gauge your progress.

⚠️ The following is the story of each route:

・Shiroha Chapter: A girl isolated by the islanders, who treat her as a "plague god"; she foresees that she will drown during the Summer Bird Ritual.

・Ao Chapter: Out of jealousy, Ao causes her older sister Ai to fall off a cliff and fall into a coma, and from then on collects the Seven Shadow Butterflies night after night; after Ai awakens, Ao falls into a deep sleep instead.

・Kamome Chapter: A treasure-hunting adventure of treasure chests and pirate ships; Kamome once vanished like a phantom, leaving only the picture book "The Adventures of the Whisker Cat Gang (ひげ猫団の冒険)" in the suitcase.

・Tsumugi Chapter: Searching for "what one wants to do (やりたいこと)"; as the day to "return" on August 31 approaches, the diary of "Tsumugi Wenders" and the legend of spiriting away come to light.

Unlock condition: In the main story, all 4 heroines must be cleared. Once the condition is met, the title screen changes to "a grassy field with no heroine," from which ALKA can be entered; once entered, the main story's normal story can no longer be started (it is restored after clearing everything).

Positioning: ALKA is the core route that gathers up all the mysteries laid down by the preceding individual routes and reveals the true rules of Torishirojima and "summer," and is therefore placed before the true ending.

⚠️ Plot: Umi's true identity is Umi's future daughter with Hiori, "Takahara Umi" — in order to spend one happy summer vacation with her mother, she returns to a time when she did not originally exist. The two become a temporary married couple through the "Butterfly Pivot Vow," and head toward the Summer Bird Ritual.

After clearing ALKA, the title screen changes from a grassy field to the sea, the background music changes to the continuous sound of waves, and from here the Pocket route continues from the end of ALKA.

The protagonist of this route switches to Nanami (CV: Hanazawa Kana) — a girl who has lost her memory. In fact, throughout the main story, she has been interspersed as a "storyteller" in the monologues.

⚠️ Plot: Nanami is a girl who lost her memory and is staying with the Naruse family; guided by the Seven-Shadow Butterflies, she learns that she is the daughter of the future Shiroha, and is ultimately surrounded by countless Seven-Shadow Butterflies, her existence fading away as she returns to being Umi.

After clearing everything, the title screen returns to its original state, and the normal story/ALKA/Pocket can all be replayed at any time.

Positioning: Officially, RB is called an "enhanced version" of the main story, not a sequel. The number of routes increases from 6 to 10.

The heroines increase from 4 to 7: in addition to the original 4, Nomura Miki and Mizuori Shizuku are promoted from supporting characters to heroines, and a brand-new character, Kamiyama Shiki (a kimono-clad girl who came in search of the "legend of the oni" and claims to be an oni), is added. In addition, Kato Umi also receives an individual route, but is not counted among the 7 heroines.

The unlock condition for ALKA is relaxed to "clear 4 out of 7 characters"; the Umi route does not affect the progression of ALKA/Pocket.

Relationship to the main story: The same summer, an extra possibility. The official sources do not explicitly state whether it is an after-story or a parallel world (unconfirmed); structurally, it is an additional route running parallel to the main story, not one that follows after the true ending.

Key Characters (Spoilers)

The following three characters are involved in the core plot truth of this work, including the endings of the ALKA route and the Pocket route. Those who have not yet completed the game should not expand this.

Key to the story・Spoiler
紬·文德斯 Tsumugi Wenders つむぎ ヴェンダース
CV: Emiri Iwai
Thought-form Her true body is a stuffed doll Spirited away

⚠️ Spoiler: The real "Tsumugi" (commonly known as Big Tsumugi) was a human girl from Torishirojima several decades ago. She fell in love with the lighthouse keeper, and after their attempted elopement failed, she vanished. The "Girl Tsumugi" the player meets in the game is not the real person, but a thought-form born from a stuffed doll that Big Tsumugi treasured, created by the wish "to not let the world forget Tsumugi." About 70 years later, she takes the form of a girl identical to Tsumugi, though her true body is a small stuffed doll. At the end of the route, she completes her mission and returns to being a doll, after which Big Tsumugi returns her to Hairi's side (the following year, she opens the door and says "Welcome back").

In other words, Kato Umi's real name The daughter from the future Core of the ALKA route

⚠️ Spoilers: This is the real name of Kato Umi. Her true identity is the future daughter of Hairi and Shiroha; because Shiroha died shortly after giving birth to her, she used the power of the Naruse clan to return to an era in which she originally did not exist, simply to spend one happy summer vacation with her mother. The kanji "羽未" is mostly written as "うみ" in the work, and the "Kato" she lodges under is the maiden name of her aunt Kyoko. She is the core figure of the ALKA route.

Key to the story・Spoiler
七海 Nanami ななみ
CV: Kana Hanazawa
Protagonist of the Pocket route Lost her memories Appears in the main story

⚠️ Spoilers: Throughout the main story, she intersperses her monologues in the role of a "storyteller," and is the protagonist of the Pocket route. Her true identity is Umi (Umi Takahara)—she once again jumped through time to the childhood era when Shiroha had just lost her parents, losing her memories in the process, and because "crossing seven seas" surfaced in her mind, she came to be called Nanami. She is afraid of the sea and cannot board a ship, and she lodges with the Naruse family; in order to stop Shiroha from awakening her powers, her own existence was ultimately rewritten and she was erased, parting in tears with Shiroha.

Natsumi Takamori and This Work

Natsumi Takamori plays one of the romanceable characters in this work,Sorakado Ao, and she plays both roles, also voicing her twin older sisterAi Sorakado—The two characters share the same appearance, yet are completely different in personality, tone, and circumstances: Ao is the lively, straightforward younger sister who quietly bears burdens for her older sister's sake, while Ai appears almost only in memories and slumber, and is her most highly praised performance in this work.

In the Ao route added in 《REFLECTION BLUE》, she even personally sang the insert song 〈Hiyoku no Chōtachi〉 (lyrics: Kai / music: Shinji Orito), one of the few works where her singing voice can be heard in full.

The 2025 TV anime and the theatrical compilation edition released on August 29 of the same year, "Sorakado Ao in the chapter, the two characters are likewise voiced by her in continuation.

About Key

Key is a bishoujo game brand under Visual Art’s, debuting in 1999 with 《Kanon》, with core creators Jun Maeda, Shinji Orito, and illustrator Na-Ga.

Key pioneered the so-called "nakige" (crying game) genre—centered on "crying, being moved, and laughing," with themes mostly revolving around family, bonds, and friendship, and placing extreme importance on music (with its own label Key Sounds Label); most of its works have received anime adaptations.

Representative works: 《Kanon》 (1999), 《AIR》 (2000), 《CLANNAD》 (2004), 《Little Busters!》 (2007), 《Rewrite》 (2011), 《Summer Pockets》 (2018), 《anemoi》 (2026).

Reception

Award-winning: 2018 Getchu "Bishoujo Game Awards" overall category 1st place, scenario category 1st place, system category 7th place; the same year's Moe Game Award Grand Prize and User Support Award. 4th place in Dengeki ONLINE's 2026 "Recommended Tearjerker Games" popularity poll.

Sales: Key's new works usually sell 70,000–80,000 copies, but this work's initial run was only about 25,000 copies; it spread slowly through word of mouth as a long-seller and only surpassed 500,000 copies by April 2026. The Switch version's initial run was 1,854 copies for the main game / 2,351 copies for REFLECTION BLUE.

Its position among Key works: This work is a new title about 2 years after《Harmonia》, and a full-priced work about 3 years after《Angel Beats! -1st beat-》; it is also Key's first foray onto a Nintendo console and its first work not released on a PlayStation-family platform. The setting is the same "summer seaside countryside" as《AIR》, but writer Kai considers this work closer to《My Summer Vacation》(Boku no Natsuyasumi), and distinguishes it from《AIR》by depicting horizontal connections between the heroines and male characters.

Summary: The double crown winner of 2018 (Getchu overall & scenario) plus the Moe Game Award, it accumulated 500,000 copies over about eight years through a low-initial, high-word-of-mouth long-seller pattern, making it a representative late-period Key work. For Ms. Natsumi Takamori, this is also one of the few landmark works where she could both "play two roles by herself" and "personally sing the character song."

"It wasn't a work that won on first-week sales—its initial run was only 25,000 copies, yet it rode on word of mouth for eight years and ultimately pushed the entire series past 500,000 copies cumulative."
